The Nine S Brands

The mountain and water brands lead the S letter. Salomon grew from a 1947 family workshop making wood saws and ski edges through bindings and 1979 alpine boots to winter apparel in 2001, an AMER Sports acquisition in 2005 and a Backcountry range in 2015. Spyder began as David Jacobs' 1978 Boulder mail order answer to a one-brand race-sweater market and became a high-end ski apparel house named for its "spider" pants. Speedo, founded in Sydney in 1914 by Alexander MacRae and based in Nottingham, leads swimwear innovation with jammers, briefs and Fastskin suits, marketed in North America by PVH. Saucony, founded in 1898 on the Saucony Creek at Kutztown, Pennsylvania, designs high performance running shoes and gear, renamed from Hyde Athletic Industries in the late 1980s.

The street, military and Western end of the letter is just as full. Sean John, created by Sean Combs and debuted in spring 1999, produced the first nationally televised New York Fashion Week runway show in 2001 and made Macy's its sole sportswear distributor in 2010. Southpole, founded in 1991 by David and Kenny Khym under Wicked Fashions, started as a premium urban brand built on its puffy "bubble" jacket and 4180 ™ Relaxed Fit denim. Soffe began in 1946 distributing to military exchanges and college bookstores and keeps its men's line rooted in the military under Delta Apparel. Skechers runs lifestyle and performance footwear divisions plus apparel at a scale of 3,000-plus styles. And Stetson closes the nine as the letter's elder: the 1865 cowboy hat, basically unchanged, on values of individuality, integrity and lasting style.
