Women's Jackets Guide

The jacket is the hardest-working layer in a woman's wardrobe: a mid-length, sleeved garment that fastens up the front — and comes in more forms than any other piece of outerwear.

A rail of women's jackets in different styles: a navy blazer, a denim jacket, a leather jacket and a quilted down jacket

A jacket is a mid-length garment for the upper body. It typically has sleeves and fastens at the front or slightly to the side, and the fastening itself is part of the design: a zipper, buttons, toggles, snaps or a belt. That short definition covers an enormous family. The silhouette, color, fabric, length and components of women's jackets all have many variants — which is exactly why the jacket, more than any other layer, is where a wardrobe gets its range.

This page is the umbrella guide to the category: the main types, how heavy each one is, and how to choose between them. Individual styles — denim, leather, shearling, camouflage and the rest — have their own guides elsewhere in this directory, and the links below and at the foot of the page will take you to them.

The Main Jacket Families

Start with the tailored branch. The blazer and its close relatives are structured, lapelled and office-ready. Beside them sit the short, shaped styles: the bolero, cropped to the ribs and made to sit over dresses; the spencer, a short jacket ending at the waist that dates to the Regency era; and the peplum jacket, fitted through the waist and flaring over the hips. The cardigan is the soft member of the family — knitted, open or buttoned, and light enough to count as a layer indoors as well as out.

The casual and utility branch is just as large: the bomber jacket with its ribbed cuffs and hem, the denim jacket, the leather jacket, the fleece jacket, the insulated down jacket, the rain jacket, the riding jacket with its longer back vent, and the windbreaker — a featherweight shell whose whole job is to stop moving air. And one classic question: what is a jacket without sleeves? That would be a vest.

Jacket or Coat? The Difference

The boundary between a jacket and a coat is length and intent. Jackets end at the waist or the hips and are built as one layer of an outfit; coats run longer — to the knee or beyond — and are built as the final layer over everything. In practice the words blur: a long down parka is a coat doing a jacket's job, and a short trench is a jacket doing a coat's. When you shop, judge by coverage and insulation rather than by the label, and use our coat and jacket definitions (linked below) when you want the formal distinctions.

Weight follows the same logic. A jacket wardrobe usually holds three weights: a light shell or unlined blazer for mild weather and indoor layering, a mid-weight jacket — denim, leather, softshell or quilted — for the shoulder seasons, and one genuinely insulated piece for cold. Between those three, with different trousers and dresses underneath, most climates are covered.

Fit, Fastenings and Details

A jacket should close without pulling. Fastened up, the front should lie flat with no gaping between buttons and no horizontal creases across the back; the shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your own shoulder; and the sleeve should end at the wrist bone with a sliver of shirt or sweater showing when you want a tailored finish. Raise your arms and sit down in it before you buy — jackets fail in motion more often than they fail standing still.

Details decide what a jacket is for. Storm flaps, sealed zips and drawcord hems belong on weather jackets; interior pockets and clean lines belong on tailored ones; ribbed cuffs signal sport heritage. Lining matters too: a lined jacket slides over knitwear and lasts longer, while an unlined one breathes and packs smaller. Match the details to the job and the jacket will earn its hanger space for years.
