Footwear consists of garments worn on the feet. The type list divides by construction. Boots enclose the foot and ankle and often the leg: cowboy boots, galoshes, go-go boots, ski boots, riding boots, waders and Wellington boots among them. Shoes enclose the foot below the ankle: athletic shoes and sneakers, climbing shoes, clogs, high heels in platform, stiletto and kitten forms, moccasins, mules, penny loafers, pointe shoes, skate shoes and tap shoes. Sandals hold the sole by straps — flip-flops and slides — and slippers and swimfins complete the standard list. Each type then specialises by activity, which is what the research list records: footwear is designed sport by sport and trade by trade, from baseball cleats and mountaineering boots to bowling shoes and waders.
That specialisation is why footwear has the largest vocabulary in clothing. A sole pattern, a cleat arrangement or a waterproof construction that suits one activity fails at another, so each activity names its own shoe. The definitions in this section and the footwear pages elsewhere on the site follow that structure: the general term here, then boots, shoes and sandals as the main divisions, then the speciality types — athletic, equestrian, fishing, hiking, soccer, running and the rest — each defined by the work its footwear has to do.
