Cotton Tape Manufacturers

Woven natural-fiber tapes and webbing for garment trimming, ties, reinforcement and binding.

Cotton tape is a narrow woven fabric made from cotton yarn — most often in a plain weave or in the diagonal herringbone-like pattern of cotton twill tape — sold on rolls for garment factories to cut and sew as ties, bindings, reinforcements and trims. It is one of the oldest and simplest narrow fabrics in the clothing trade, and it endures because cotton does several jobs well at once: it is soft against skin, it sews and presses easily, it dyes readily, it withstands hot laundering, and it carries none of the stiffness or shine of a synthetic tape.

This page explains cotton tapes for buyers and garment manufacturers: how the plain and twill constructions differ, the widths and weights in normal trade use, where cotton tape is used inside and outside a garment, and how to specify it. The manufacturer listings below include narrow-fabric mills and trimming suppliers offering cotton tape alongside their wider tape and webbing ranges, and the guides at the bottom of the page cover the full tapes family.

Plain Weave, Twill Tape and Webbing

The lightest cotton tapes are plain-woven: a simple over-and-under weave that produces a flat, stable tape used for binding, tying and light reinforcement. Cotton twill tape is woven with a diagonal twill line — frequently in a herringbone pattern — which makes it slightly more supple and better able to ease along a seam or curve, and gives it the familiar ridged hand feel of apron ties and bunting tape. Heavier cotton webbings are woven thicker and denser, trading drape for strength, and serve as straps, belts and load-bearing ties.

Construction decides behaviour more than fiber alone. A plain tape stays put and resists stretching, which suits seam stay tape and straight reinforcement. A twill tape drapes and knots better, which suits drawstrings, ties and casings. A webbing carries weight, which suits bag handles, apron neck straps and upholstery work. When a specification just says cotton tape, the first question to settle is which of these three families the job actually needs.

Where Cotton Tape Is Used in Garments

Inside garments, cotton tape reinforces the places that take strain: it stays shoulder seams so knits do not grow, stabilises necklines and armholes, reinforces the corners of pockets and vents, and backs button stands and plackets. As a visible component it becomes apron ties and neck straps, drawstrings for hoods and waists, hanging loops, laundry and name-tape applications, corset and crinoline boning casings, and the ties of wrap dresses, hospital gowns and chef wear — anywhere a soft, washable, knot-able tie is needed against the body.

Cotton is chosen over polyester for these jobs when skin comfort, heat tolerance or a natural-fiber garment story matters, and when the tape must take the same dye bath or the same hot wash as a cotton shell fabric. Its weaknesses should be specified around honestly: cotton absorbs water, can shrink if not pre-shrunk, and mildews if stored damp, so orders for humid supply chains or medical laundering should state pre-shrinking and finishing requirements up front.

Widths, Weights and Finishes

Cotton tapes are traded in narrow widths for garment work — commonly from a few millimetres for fine binding up to several centimetres for webbing — and in weights from light binding tapes to heavy strap webbings. The practical checks are thickness under the presser foot, edge quality (a tape that frays at the cut end needs sealing, folding or a denser weave), and shrinkage behaviour against the shell fabric. Natural ecru tape is the stock form; bleached white, piece-dyed colors and printed versions are standard catalogue options from most narrow-fabric mills.

Finishes change the tape as much as weave does. Soft-finished tape suits ties and next-to-skin uses; starched or sized tape feeds more crisply through folders and automatic cutters; pre-shrunk tape protects garment dimensions. Flame-retardant, water-repellent and antibacterial finishes exist for workwear, protective clothing and medical textiles, but each finish should be ordered deliberately and tested on the finished garment rather than assumed from a catalogue description.

Specifying and Ordering Cotton Tape

Specify the weave family (plain, twill or webbing), the width, the weight or thickness, the color and whether it is ecru, bleached or dyed, any finish, and the put-up — roll length and core — the cutting room expects. Name the end use: a mill told the tape will stay a shoulder seam on a knitted top will not quote the same construction as one told it will carry an apron. Because cotton is a natural fiber with lot variation, approve a lab dip or color standard for dyed tape and keep a sealed reference sample with the order.

Before bulk delivery, sew and wash a trial: stitch the tape into the actual seam or tie it will form, launder it with the garment at the garment's care temperature, and check shrinkage, color bleed, knot security and edge fray. Cotton prices move with the fiber market — the cotton pricing guide linked at the top of this page tracks that background — so validity periods on quotations for large natural-fiber orders are worth confirming in writing.

Common Questions

What is cotton twill tape used for?

Cotton twill tape — the diagonal or herringbone-woven cotton tape — is used for apron ties and neck straps, drawstrings, seam stabilising, binding, casings and reinforcement inside garments. Its twill weave makes it more supple and better at easing along seams and curves than a plain-woven tape.

Why choose cotton tape instead of polyester tape?

Cotton is soft against skin, presses and sews easily, dyes readily and tolerates hot laundering, and it suits natural-fiber garments. Polyester tape is stronger for its weight and resists moisture and mildew, so the choice turns on comfort, care conditions and end use.

Does cotton tape shrink?

Cotton tape can shrink in laundering if it has not been pre-shrunk. For garments with fixed dimensions, order pre-shrunk tape and wash-test the tape together with the shell fabric at the garment care temperature before bulk production.
