A flat lay of men's clothing beginning with P: folded pants and polo shirts beside a peacoat, printed t-shirts and penny loafers, product photography with no people

Welcome to the P section of the Men's Clothes Guide - one of the alphabet's hardest-working letters, with twenty-three topics built around two great clusters. The first is pants: the umbrella guide, the plain-front and pleated fronts that divide all trousers between them, pinstripe pants for the patterned dress end, and polyester pants in the polyester section below. The second is the printed family: printed t-shirts and their printed cotton branch, printed shirts, and the clinical prints - printed scrubs, printed lab coats and printed medical uniforms, with patient gowns completing the ward.

Around those clusters the letter covers the rest of a man's day. Morning starts with pajamas, the sleepwear guide, and the shoe rack offers penny loafers. The shirt drawer holds the polo shirt and its fabric cousin the pique tennis shirt, plus pocket tees and the finishing touch of pocket squares. Weather is answered by the naval peacoat and the tent-simple poncho; training by performance apparel; and the imagination by pirate clothing, the costume guide built from real sailors' dress. The grid below lists all twenty-one flat topics exactly once, in alphabetical order, and the polyester section that follows it lists the letter's two subfolder guides.

How to Use These Guides

Read P by its clusters and each guide answers a different question. In the pants cluster, start with the umbrella guide for rise, leg and break, then take the front question - plain or pleated - as a fit decision, the pinstripe guide as a pattern and suiting question, and polyester as a fiber question about travel, crease and care. In the printed cluster, the printed t-shirts guide reads print methods by touch, the cotton guide reads the substrate beneath them, the shirts guide reads pattern scale on a woven shirt, and the three clinical guides separate the individual garment (scrubs), the professional frame (lab coats) and the department-wide system (medical uniforms) - with patient gowns covering the other side of the ward, the person the whole system serves.

The standalone guides reward the same discipline in miniature. Polo and pique are a deliberate pair: one reads a shirt style from collar to banded sleeve, the other reads the waffle knit most such shirts are made from, and together they teach the habit of separating garment from fabric that the whole P letter keeps applying - pants from their fronts, prints from their cloth, polyester the fiber judged in pants and in ties. Where a topic reaches into a neighboring letter - scrubs into S, lab coats into L, loafers into S for shoes - the guide says so and links onward, because the alphabet is an index, not a set of walls.

From Pajamas to Polyester

Few letters follow a man so completely through a day. P dresses him for sleep, for the office and the ward, for weather naval and weather merely wet, for the tennis court his pique shirt was invented on and the training ground of performance apparel. It even dresses him, once a year and entirely on purpose, as a pirate. Twenty-three topics, one initial - and the two clusters at its heart, pants and prints, between them cover how most men's clothes are actually chosen: by how they are cut, and by what is printed on them.

Men's Polyester Guides

The P letter's subfolder family: the two guides filed under clothes/mens/p/polyester/, where the polyester fiber is judged as trousers and as ties - what modern polyester does well, where it still loses to natural fibers, and how the blends change the answer:
